Criticism in Delft blue
McDonald’s fries, electricity pylons in Dutch landscapes and a middle finger made in traditional Delftware. Chris Rijk combines traditionally hand-painted earthenware with queer and pop culture, delivering a witty – and sometimes provocative – critique of commerce and capitalism.
Ceramics as time capsule
Rijk’s work is his own personal truth: he chooses the objects and the subjects. Like the old-fashioned apothecary’s jars with inscriptions reading ‘TikTok’, ‘fast fashion’ and ‘Bitcoin’. Intended as a time capsule, because ceramics do not decay.

"Ceramics are seen as innocent, but that’s where the freedom lies. No one expects ceramics to be shocking."
- Artist Chris Rijk
