About the artwork
Two children are making music together. The girl sings intently from a book and keeps time with her hand. The boy looks up while playing the violin, his mouth open. You can see how completely absorbed they are in making music. Frans Hals' loose brushstrokes are clearly visible, for example in the girl's hair and the boy's fur hat. These paintings are special because they may depict two of Hals' own children – perhaps his daughter Sarah and son Frans junior. An archive document from 1644 describes the paintings as ‘two square depictions of the children of Hals of Haarlem, painted by him’.
