About the artwork

Twelve men are lined up in pairs for a solemn procession. A thirteenth is holding a picture of the Holy Sepulchre, the site of Christ’s tomb. While it looks as if the men are about to leave for Jerusalem, in fact, they have already been there. As the palm branches show, and the inscriptions below. The artist, Jan van Scorel had also made the pilgrimage – he is the third from the right. His painting is one of the earliest group portraits in the Northern Netherlands.
