In her art, De Jong would abandon the normal rules of composition to create her own imaginatively idiosyncratic universe: “I was pretty down to earth... except when I ventured into the cosmos.” She painted this piece as part of her Cosmonauts series about the rise of new technologies in the 1960s, such as space travel.
