About the artwork

Human-like figures in a jumble of patterns. This work by Jacqueline de Jong is both figurative and abstract. In her art, De Jong would abandon the normal rules of composition to create her own imaginatively idiosyncratic universe: “I was pretty down to earth... except when I ventured into the cosmos.” She painted this piece as part of her Cosmonauts series about the rise of new technologies in the 1960s, such as space travel.
