About the artwork

Five young people dance to their favourite music. Rineke Dijkstra filmed Megan, Simon, Nicky, Philip and Dee in a specially built studio on the dancefloor of The Krazyhouse, a club in Liverpool. The viewer stands in the middle of four projections.
The white background obscures the club itself. Dijkstra was interested in how the young people moved to the music. Some dance with abandon, others are introspective and shyly avoid looking into the camera. The result is both disarming and familiar. Dijkstra shows how these young people use social and cultural codes, like clothing styles and dance moves, to shape their identity.
