About the artwork
Ritsema liked to show how well she could paint different materials: a glass bottle, a metal dish, a piece of green fabric and a string of pearls hung over a chair. A mask lies on the chair, and behind it we see the head of a banjo. The painting was shown at the Frans Hals Museum in 1951. It belonged to a private collector at the time, but as a big fan of this piece the director of the museum bought it for the collection.
