As a young adult, Jesus comes to the River Jordan to be baptised by John the Baptist. As John performs the rite, God’s voice is heard from the heavens and the Holy Spirit appears in the form of a radiant dove. People round about look on amazed. On his travels in Italy, Jan van Scorel saw the ancient Roman ruins and works by Renaissance masters such as Rafael and Michelangelo. These influences are evident in the landscape, the vivid colours and the postures of the figures.
