About the artwork
On 29 April 1613, Princess Elisabeth Stuart of England and her husband Frederick V, the Elector Palatine, arrived at Flushing, on their way to Bohemia. Ten years later, Hendrik Vroom – the originator of marine painting – depicted this view of their arrival. It is a festive occasion with salutes fired, flags flying and ships and boats all about. The royal couple are on the big ship left of centre: the Prince Royal.
