Willem Claesz Heda (Haarlem, 1594 – Haarlem, 1680)

Still Life with half-eaten Pie

1633

This arrangement looks random, with that silver tazza tipped on its side, the crumpled napkin and a half-eaten bramble pie, but nothing could be further from the truth – Willem Heda placed each object with meticulous care. Still lifes of expensive tableware like this were his speciality and his ability to depict different textures was second to none. Silver, pewter and glass each reflects the light in a particular way. Heda needed only a limited range of colours for this still life. The only exception being the bright yellow of the lemon.
