About the artwork
Dancing bears, a docile lamb and a man urinating on the moon. If you look carefully, you’ll see all kinds of Dutch proverbs in this imaginary village. Some you’ll still hear today; others have fallen into disuse. Pieter Brueghel copied the painting from his father, Pieter Brueghel the Elder (1526/30-1569). The Brueghels painted many versions on this theme. The proverbs are all about how to behave and what people shouldn’t do. It’s the latter that the artist shows. That’s more fun to watch, of course.
