About the artwork
Prussian Baroness Olga Wüste-von Gotsch (1848-1924) was known as the ‘Santpoort philanthropist’. She commissioned Thérèse Schwartze – portraitist of the Dutch high society – to paint her portrait. The name Wüste-von Gotsch was already known for a while, though the details of her life were not clear yet. She inherited the Spaarnberg estate near Haarlem, and founded a nursery school there for boys and girls from all socioeconomic classes and religions.
