About the artwork
Jan Toorop called this portrait 'Madame B', so it was long assumed to be a portrait of his sister, Elize Beets-Toorop. But a few years ago, research revealed that this is in fact Toorop’s friend, the Belgian sculptor and jewellery maker Elisa Beetz- Charpentier (1859-1949). The Musée d'Orsay in Paris owns seven of Beetz’ bronze sculptures. Beetz visited him in 1903, in the village of Domburg, where he painted her bathed in Zeeland’s warm light.
