About the artwork

Cornelia Vooght (1578-1666) was 53 when Frans Hals painted her portrait and that of her husband Nicolaes van der Meer. She survived her husband by almost twenty years and died at the age of 88. Vooght was born into a family of brewers, one of Haarlem’s leading families. That is reflected in her fur-lined robe – a real winter outfit. Hals painted her heavy skirt with broad brushstrokes, but her face is rendered in more detail.
