About the artwork
Chinese-Indonesian restaurants are an integral part of Dutch culinary culture. They first appeared in the early 20th century, when Chinese labourers came to work in the port of Rotterdam. The Chinese dishes they served changed as people arrived from Indonesia, which for centuries had been ruled by the Dutch.
Benjamin Li photographs dishes at Chinese-Indonesian restaurants throughout the Netherlands, as a way of exploring his identity and family history. Li turns his photographs into jigsaw puzzles, leaving a few pieces blank. These represent the disappearance of the country’s Chinese-Indonesian restaurants.
