Dirck Hals (Haarlem, 1591 – Haarlem, 1656)
Music-Making Company on a Terrace
ca. 1620
Young people have gathered in a garden, or perhaps a park. These beautiful, evidently wealthy people are dressed in stunning clothes. That scarlet ensemble, for example! Contemporaries would have understood that this is all about love: after all, like music, love depends on harmony. But the love portrayed here by Dirck Hals – younger brother of Frans – is not just spiritual, these revellers are openly flirting. Even the dogs are sniffing each other.
