Pieter Saenredam’s name is synonymous with 17th-century church interiors – the Haarlem artist made these his speciality. He prepared for his paintings with detailed sketches, including measurements and distances. While he often painted prominent old churches, Haarlem’s Nieuwe Kerk was, as the name suggests, a new church, designed by his friend Jacob van Campen. The towering columns were dropped from the plan when building work started. Even so, Saenredam included them here.
