About the artwork
What an explosion of colour! Ochre-yellow sunflowers stand out clearly against the bright blue background. Vincent van Gogh was a great source of inspiration to Charley Toorop. “A breakthrough into a new world”, was how she described his work. Van Gogh was in fact one of the reasons she became an artist herself. She shared his love of nature –sunflowers in particular – and followed in his footsteps to the South of France.
