About the artwork
Dirck van Delen and Dirck Hals collaborated on a number of paintings, of which this is just one example. Van Delen painted the interior, with its classical pilasters and portals, Dirck Hals – Frans Hals’s brother – inserted the figures. These are dressed in fashionable clothes, eating, drinking and flirting. On the left, two men are playing backgammon, a popular game of chance. Anything can happen, it seems to be telling the partygoers. And us too.
