About the artwork
To mark the end of their tenure, the officers of the Calivermen civic guard held a luxurious banquet, captured by Frans Hals in this dynamic portrait. The damask tablecloth was made in Haarlem. The West India Company (WIC) used damask to purchase enslaved people in Africa. A 1671 document states that ‘60 ells of Haarlem damask’ was exchanged for an enslaved person.
