About the artwork
Make-up and costumes play an important role in the work of Sin Wai Kin, and are a way to bring their imagination to life. Sin creates characters who embody ideas about culture and identity. They are inspired by art history and pop culture, including the female nude and the stereotypical Hollywood ideal of beauty.
In this video work Sin uses a ‘hyperfeminine’ drag character with a platinum blonde wig, silicon breasts and high heels. They prompt us to consider a possible future – also known as ‘speculative fiction’ – in which we are not constrained by binary notions of gender and beauty.
