Loans

Please note: due to our large-scale relocation of the storage facility, there will be a general suspension of loans until 1 October 2026.

Our collection

The collection of the Frans Hals Museum is owned by the municipality of Haarlem and is managed by the museum. The collection includes old, modern and contemporary art, as well as historical objects and decorative arts.

On loan

We are keen to display as much of our collection as possible, both at home and abroad. In principle, all works are available for loan, with the exception of Frans Hals’ militia paintings. Occasionally, the physical condition of a work prevents it from being loaned out. In such cases, we are happy to discuss whether we can contribute in another way.

Requirements

A loan application must comply with the loan conditions.

View the conditions

We would like to receive loan applications for old and modern art no later than 12 months before the exhibition opens via loans@franshalsmuseum.nl. For contemporary art, this deadline is 6 months at the latest. We cannot guarantee that requests submitted at shorter notice will be considered. The applicant must provide all relevant information: a concept for the exhibition, a justification of its significance for the exhibition, and a recent facilities report. We will treat this information as confidential.

Procedure

Loan requests are reviewed internally on a monthly basis. We then assess the physical condition of the work. The collection registrar subsequently provides feedback to the applicant.

Costs

In the case of large or complex loan requests, we are happy to discuss with the applicant the number of hours required and the passing on of any costs, for example for necessary conservation and restoration.
