About the artwork

Haarlem artist Coba Ritsema had great success both at home and abroad. She would often paint children from her neighbourhood at her studio in Amsterdam. Leentje (full name Helena Hendrika van Bueren, 1889-1972) was one of them. She often sat for Ritsema. We recently found Leentje in Amsterdam’s population register. She lived on Keizersgracht, within walking distance of Ritsema’s studio on Singel. After Leentje’s portraits had been sold, Ritsema gave part of the profit to the Van Bueren family.
