About the artwork

The burning candle, the watch and the skull are far from accidental. They are there to remind us that all things must pass. The watch, for example, suggests time slipping away. While Pieter Claesz often celebrated the finer things in life in his still lifes, here the message is rather less optimistic. The flower will soon wilt, the candle is nearly finished. Death lies waiting.
