Hals was already an old man himself – some eighty years of age – when he painted the regents of the Old Men’s Almshouse. Unlike the civic guard paintings in this room, we do not know who is portrayed in this painting. The bright red stocking in the bottom right is a bold detail – typical of Hals. There must have been more colour in the past, but unfortunately parts of the painting, such as the dark red tablecloth, have darkened over the centuries.
