About the artwork

The brewers of Haarlem had their own association, the Guild of St Martin. They showed off their wealth by commissioning this superb goblet, which is a masterpiece of silversmithing. Printmaker Hendrick Goltzius and sculptor Hendrick de Keyser produced designs, and silversmiths Ernst van Vianen and Jacob Pietersz van Alckemade made the goblet itself. To remind the brewers that life is not only about money, the goblet is decorated with scenes from the life of Saint Martin, who shared his warm winter cloak with a poor man.
