About the artwork
Isaac Israels painted portraits of several Indonesian students at his studio in The Hague. Amongst whom Raden Mas Pandji Sosrokartono (1877-1952), the first Indonesian student to be officially admitted to a Dutch university. Sosrokartono studied Asian languages and literature in Leiden. He went on to work as a war correspondent and translator for the League of Nations. Sosrokartono believed that Dutch people should not patronise the Javans. But he also thought that Javans should learn Dutch, to strengthen the ties between the two countries.
